Daily journal of life in the field during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1864.

The collection consists of a two-volume diary by William E. Crane describing his experiences from September 1861 to May 1862 and from November 1862 to December 1864. Highlights include action at Huntsville, Widow's Creek, Stone River (Murfreesboro), Snow Hill, Elk River, Chickamauga, Loudon and Lovejoy's Station. A military crest for William Crane accompanies the diary.

William E. Crane, 1835-1905, joined the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in Cincinnati in 1861 and served in the Civil War campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. Crane's company had contact with John Morgan's cavalry and participated in several battles. Crane also served on several court-martials. He resigned from the army in December 1864.
